The MCP Server Engineering Masterclass teaches you to build Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers, the components that connect AI models and agents to tools, data and other systems. It is for developers who want to move past simple demos and build MCP servers that are secure, tested and ready to deploy.

The course starts with MCP architecture and your first server, then works through every building block, from tools, resources and prompts to transports and clients, before moving on to real integrations, security, production engineering and enterprise patterns. All 19 videos are free on YouTube and listed on the MCP Server Engineering course page.

Who this course is for

  • Developers building AI features who need models to call their own APIs, databases or files in a standard way.
  • Agent builders who want to understand what happens underneath when an agent uses an MCP tool.
  • Platform and enterprise architects planning how MCP servers will be secured, deployed and governed across a company.

The catalog marks the course Intermediate. You should be comfortable writing code. You do not need to know MCP already, because the first video starts with fundamentals and architecture.

What you will learn

1. MCP fundamentals and setup. MCP Fundamentals And Architecture, MCP Development Environment and Build Your First MCP Server explain how hosts, clients and servers fit together and get a working server running early. Everything later in the course hangs on that mental model.

2. The three MCP primitives. MCP Tools Deep Dive, MCP Resources and MCP Prompts cover what a server can offer a model. Knowing when something should be a tool, a resource or a prompt is one of the most useful design skills in MCP, and the tools video is the longest in the course.

3. Transports and clients. MCP Transports and MCP Client Development show how messages move between client and server, and what the client side has to do. This is the key to understanding the difference between local and remote servers.

4. Real integrations. MCP And AI Agents, MCP With Databases, MCP With REST APIs and Files Git And Developer Servers connect servers to the systems people actually use. These are where the course’s build-first labs, such as a database server and a REST API server, come in.

5. Security and production. MCP Security, Production MCP Engineering, Testing And Debugging and Deploying MCP Servers turn a working server into one you can trust. The course description lists authentication and authorisation, threat protection, tool permissions and Docker and cloud deployment among the topics.

6. Enterprise architecture and advanced patterns. Enterprise MCP Architecture and Advanced MCP Patterns finish the course with how MCP fits at company scale, including enterprise MCP gateways.

How the course is organised

There are 19 videos and about 7.7 hours in total. After a short overview, 18 numbered modules each run about 22–33 minutes:

  • Modules 01–03: fundamentals, environment and the first server.
  • Modules 04–08: tools, resources, prompts, transports and clients.
  • Modules 09–12: agents, databases, REST APIs, files and developer servers.
  • Modules 13–16: security, production engineering, testing and deployment.
  • Modules 17–18: enterprise architecture and advanced patterns.

It is a build-first course, so most modules include hands-on work rather than slides alone.

How to study it step by step

  1. Watch the overview to see the projects you will build.
  2. Get your environment working in module 02 before you go further. Every later module assumes it works.
  3. Type the first server yourself in module 03 instead of copying it. Small mistakes here teach you the protocol.
  4. After modules 04–06, write a one-line rule for when you would use a tool, a resource or a prompt. Check it again after the integration modules.
  5. Pick one integration you need at work, such as a database or a REST API, and rebuild that module’s server against your own test system.
  6. Do not skip security and testing. Watch modules 13 and 15 before you deploy anything a real agent can call.
  7. Finish with the enterprise modules and map their patterns onto your own organisation.

This course currently has no Skills Pragati hands-on lab guide, practice simulation or mock exam. The videos and your own code are the practice.

Frequently asked questions

Is the MCP Server Engineering Masterclass free?

Yes. All 19 videos are free on YouTube. You can follow them in order from the course page.

How long does the course take?

About 7.7 hours of video. Since nearly every module involves building, most learners take two to three times that once they code along, so plan for a few weeks of steady evenings.

Do I need to know MCP before starting?

No. Module 01 starts with fundamentals and architecture, and module 03 builds your first server. You do need to be comfortable writing code, because the course is rated Intermediate.

What should I take after this?

To see MCP used inside a full agent project, try Build Enterprise AI Agents for Microsoft 365 Administration with Claude, which has a module on MCP for Microsoft 365 administration. AI Systems Engineering Beginner to Advanced is another course in the same AI engineering track.
